Work Environment

Volunteers work in a creative team alongside photographers, videographers, journalists, and volunteers from other fields.
Much of the work takes place in the field — in schools, hospitals, orphanages, villages, or at cultural events. Tasks include filming, editing, and creative processing of material.
At the volunteer house, volunteers collaborate, exchange ideas, and present their final pieces.

Why your help matters

Audiovisual art has the power to connect worlds and speak beyond language.
With your projects, you will help amplify the voice of The Gambia, showcase authentic daily life, and inspire new volunteers and donors.
Your art becomes a tool for awareness, learning, and empathy — proof that creativity and a camera can drive meaningful change.

Role overview (what you’ll do) — under staff supervision

As an audiovisual arts volunteer, you will:
• film videos, interviews, documentaries, and artistic projects,
• create photographs and sound recordings for digital content,
• edit footage and prepare multimedia materials,
• collaborate with local creators at cultural events,
• contribute to the visual identity of partner organizations,
• produce short films or artistic collages.

Who we’re looking for

• students or enthusiasts of film, photography, multimedia, art, or journalism,
• individuals with a strong sense of aesthetics, storytelling, and emotion,
• people who can work independently and as part of a team,
• those with basic knowledge of photography, editing, or filming,
• open-minded, patient, and respectful creators ready to work in simple conditions.

How to prepare

Before arriving, it is recommended that you:
• bring basic filming or photography equipment (camera, microphone, tripod, phone),
• ensure backup power and storage for your recordings,
• prepare a few project ideas (e.g., a documentary, a portrait series, a short video),
• learn about Gambian cultural characteristics and respectful ways of portraying people,
• reflect on the ethical considerations of art in a humanitarian environment.

Training and supervision

At the beginning, you will have an introductory meeting with the volunteer coordinator, who will present the projects, the organization’s goals, and recording guidelines.
A mentor will accompany you during your first field recordings, review your material, and support you with technical or content-related questions if needed.
You may also collaborate with volunteers from other fields on multimedia stories (photo + video + text).

Program Goals

The goal of the program is to connect art and humanitarian work — to create content that inspires, educates, and authentically represents life in The Gambia.
The project promotes understanding, empathy, and artistic expression as a bridge between cultures.

Fundraising

Volunteers can support audiovisual fundraising campaigns by creating short films, interviews, and stories that highlight specific needs and achievements of the projects.

Stories of Our Volunteers

Zala Košir

This can’t be started differently than to say that the experience was amazing, and it truly warmed my heart. If you are thinking of going to The Gambia as a volunteer, don’t wait any longer – just go for it. You won’t regret it. I know I should start at the beginning, so I’ll go back now.
