If you believe that knowledge opens the door to the future and you want to help children, youth, and adults in The Gambia explore the world of computers, the internet, and digital skills – this program is right for you.
As a volunteer, you will teach basic computer skills (keyboard use, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet, email, digital safety) and help learners understand how technology can support education, creativity, and everyday life.
The program promotes digital equality, access to information, and confidence in using technology – especially in communities where the digital world is still new.

Work Environment

Volunteers will work in simple but welcoming classrooms, computer corners, or community spaces where lessons often take place with limited technical resources.
The work is carried out in cooperation with local teachers and mentors, often with young learners eager to acquire essential digital skills.
A supportive environment is created where volunteers not only teach but also learn about Gambian culture, learning styles, and daily life – through exchange of experiences, knowledge, and mutual respect.
Everything takes place in a relaxed, creative environment where flexibility and teamwork are essential.

Why your help matters

In The Gambia, access to computers and the internet is still not guaranteed. Your knowledge helps reduce the digital divide and gives people opportunities for learning, work, and global connection.
Digital literacy is a foundation of modern education – your contribution will allow children and young people to gain valuable skills that can help them build a better future.

Role overview (what you’ll do) — under staff supervision

As a digital literacy volunteer, you will participate in:
• leading basic computer workshops (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, internet, email),
• teaching lessons on digital safety and responsible internet use,
• assisting in preparing educational materials and resources,
• maintaining and organizing the computer classroom,
• supporting students in independent work,
• developing simple digital projects (e.g., basic presentations or posters),
• collaborating with local teachers and mentors on lesson planning.

Who we’re looking for

• students or enthusiasts of computer science, IT, education, or related fields,
• individuals with basic computer knowledge and an interest in teaching,
• patient, open-minded people willing to adapt explanations to different skill levels,
• volunteers interested in community development and digital education,
• additional advantage: basic skills in graphic design, video, or digital tools.

How to prepare

Before departure, you can prepare by:
• refreshing your knowledge of basic computer programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint),
• thinking of simple exercises and examples for teaching computer skills without internet access,
• preparing materials you can use during lessons (worksheets, presentations, etc.),
• familiarizing yourself with basic cultural differences in learning and communication,
• bringing your laptop or USB drives with teaching resources.

Training and supervision

At the beginning of the program, you will attend an introductory meeting with the local coordinator, who will explain the schedule, introduce the students, and show you the equipment.
You will then gradually integrate into the work – first by observing, then by independently leading workshops.
Mentors will regularly discuss your progress with you and help you adjust your teaching methods to local conditions.

Program Goals

The aim of the program is to reduce digital inequality and provide access to knowledge that opens new opportunities.
Volunteers help build confidence, independence, and the ability to use technology for learning, work, and creativity.

Fundraising

Volunteers can help collect computer equipment and consumables (mice, keyboards, USB drives, toners, paper, chargers, etc.) that enable workshops and support students in their learning.

Zala Košir

This can’t be started differently than to say that the experience was amazing, and it truly warmed my heart. If you are thinking of going to The Gambia as a volunteer, don’t wait any longer – just go for it. You won’t regret it. I know I should start at the beginning, so I’ll go back now.
