This program is designed for volunteers who want to tell the stories of The Gambia through art, technology, and social engagement. Using sound, video, digital media, performance, or spatial installations, you will explore the culture, colors, and energy of The Gambia and transform them into artistic expressions that connect people and spread messages of solidarity and humanity.

As a volunteer, you will have the opportunity to create and implement small-scale art projects in collaboration with local artists, teachers, and communities — from workshops and exhibitions to interactive installations. The program encourages creativity, dialogue, and intercultural exchange through art as a bridge between cultures.

Work Environment

Volunteers will work in an open and inspiring environment alongside other artists, volunteers, and teachers. Projects typically take place in schools, cultural centers, community spaces, orphanages, or public areas where art becomes a tool for expression, collaboration, and empowerment.

Collaboration with local artists enables intercultural exchange and the co-creation of works that connect traditional and contemporary art.

Why your help matters

In The Gambia, art is not only an expression of beauty — it is a way of life and communication. With your knowledge and creativity, you will contribute to the artistic development of young people, boost their confidence, and help spread messages of peace, cooperation, and dignity.

Your work will demonstrate that art can unite cultures and foster understanding among people.

How to prepare

Before arriving, it is recommended that you:
• think about themes you’d like to explore (e.g., identity, childhood, nature, community, future),
• bring basic artistic or digital materials (sketchbooks, paints, laptop, camera, etc.),
• prepare a few ideas for workshops or mini projects,
• learn about African culture and artistic practices,
• prepare for creating in simple but inspiring conditions.

Who we’re looking for

• students or enthusiasts of art, design, media, education, music, or technology,
• creative individuals with a sense of community and the social value of art,
• people who are curious, open-minded, and willing to improvise,
• volunteers interested in intercultural dialogue and artistic exploration,
• bonus: basic knowledge of graphic design, sound, video, or multimedia.

Role overview (what you’ll do) — under staff supervision

As a volunteer in intermedia art, you will take part in:
• developing artistic workshops and projects,
• creating visual, digital, sound-based, or interactive works,
• leading creative activities with children and youth,
• assisting in organizing exhibitions, performances, and events,
• filming, photographing, or documenting artistic processes,
• collaborating with local artists and teachers,
• supporting communication and promotion of art events.

Training and supervision

At the start, you will have an introductory meeting with the volunteer coordinator, where you will learn about the projects, goals, and gradually integrate into ongoing artistic activities while becoming familiar with the local artistic context.

Mentorship takes place through collaboration and reflection, with the possibility to present your work at the end of your volunteer stay (e.g., group exhibition or screening).

You may also collaborate with volunteers from other fields on multimedia stories (photo + video + text).

Program Goals

The goal of the program is to connect art and society — to use creativity as a tool for education, connection, and inspiration. Volunteers help develop creative thinking, empower young people, and spread the message that art has the power to change the world.

Fundraising

Volunteers may help collect donations for art supplies (paints, brushes, paper, canvases, cameras, laptops), enabling the continuation of workshops and creative projects for children and youth.

Stories of Our Volunteers

Zala Košir

This can’t be started differently than to say that the experience was amazing, and it truly warmed my heart. If you are thinking of going to The Gambia as a volunteer, don’t wait any longer – just go for it. You won’t regret it. I know I should start at the beginning, so I’ll go back now.
