Learning Lab
The Learning Lab is an innovative educational space — a special classroom that combines technology, play, and exploratory learning. It is an interactive learning system that allows children to learn at their own pace through a combination of tablet applications, didactic games, and hands-on tasks. Instead of traditional teachers, children are guided by facilitators — teachers and volunteers who support, encourage, and help them develop reading, math, and writing skills in a fun, playful, and independent way.

Work Environment
The Learning Lab is a learning space equipped with nine literacy stations (reading, writing, comprehension) and eight math stations (numbers, arithmetic, logical thinking). Each station combines a tablet application, a game, or a hands-on task. Children work independently, while volunteers or teachers provide support and motivation.
Why your help matters
Volunteers work together with local teachers to create an environment where children learn with joy, confidence, and curiosity. In communities where access to quality education is limited, the Learning Lab offers a unique opportunity for children to learn reading, writing, and mathematics in a modern and engaging way. Your presence provides the personal support, understanding, and warmth that technology alone cannot replace.
Role overview (what you’ll do) — under staff supervision
Volunteers will support children in their daily learning and skill development.
Your main tasks will include:
• assisting children in using tablet applications and solving learning challenges,
• encouraging children in reading, writing, and learning numbers,
• organizing games, quizzes, and activities in the learning center,
• collaborating with local teachers,
• maintaining order and a motivating atmosphere in the classroom.
Who we’re looking for
A volunteer who is patient, creative, responsible, and open to working with children. A pedagogical background is not required — what matters most is a genuine joy in working with children and a willingness to learn.
How to prepare
Before starting work in the classroom, it is helpful to familiarize yourself with the basics of early childhood education and child development, as well as with activities that can be carried out in the classroom.
Training and supervision
First day: the volunteer coordinator or experienced volunteers will take you to the kindergarten. Upon arrival, the principal will introduce you to the space and explain how the work is organized. You will then meet the children.
First few days: gradual involvement in activities and assisting during daily tasks. Daily conversations with the coordinator will help you adjust and learn.
In the end: reflection on your experience and, if desired, the option to receive a volunteer certificate.
Program Goals
To provide children in The Gambia with quality, accessible, and modern learning of basic skills (reading, writing, mathematics) through the use of interactive technology and an approach that fosters curiosity and independence. To improve children’s overall knowledge.
Fundraising
Each volunteer is encouraged to contribute to fundraising efforts. Based on experience, it is possible to raise at least €250 with just a small amount of effort. These funds are used to purchase creative materials, provide small rewards to teachers for their participation, cover maintenance and ongoing kindergarten expenses (electricity, water, repairs, cleaning, painting, wall renovations), and, when needed, support other projects of the organization or emergency assistance. Volunteers can also help collect donations for purchasing educational materials and equipment for the Learning Lab classroom.

Stories of Our Volunteers
Zala Košir
This can’t be started differently than to say that the experience was amazing, and it truly warmed my heart. If you are thinking of going to The Gambia as a volunteer, don’t wait any longer – just go for it. You won’t regret it. I know I should start at the beginning, so I’ll go back now.
