Reforestation Project in Village Community
This volunteer program focuses on land restoration, tree planting and maintenance, and educating local communities about permaculture and agroforestry practices. Volunteers take part in the tree nursery, tree planting projects, seedling care, and support local initiatives for environmental regeneration.
As a volunteer, you will help maintain the tree nursery, participate in tree planting, care for seedlings, dig water retention trenches, and work with the local community on ecological practices and education. You will also assist with knowledge exchange, training, and providing support to the project’s core team.

About Reforest The Future Gambia
The main activities revolve around the tree nursery — growing seedlings, maintaining greenery, planting trees, and implementing ecological practices (such as swales and erosion prevention) in collaboration with the local team and community.
Why your help matters
The Gambia faces serious environmental challenges — widespread deforestation and land degradation threaten soil fertility, water resources, and the long-term survival of local communities. Due to deforestation and climate change, arable land is shrinking, soil erosion is increasing, and food insecurity is becoming a growing concern.
As a volunteer, your work contributes directly to the regeneration of nature and the restoration of ecosystems. By planting trees, nurturing seedlings, and rehabilitating degraded land, you help restore soil fertility, prevent erosion, and strengthen local food security.
Your involvement has an even broader impact. By engaging with the community, you will educate local women, youth, and farmers about sustainable practices — the importance of protecting nature, recycling resources, and producing their own food. Thus, it’s not only about planting trees but also about sowing knowledge, responsibility, and hope.
Every volunteer increases the strength of the project — with more hands, more trees can be planted, more villages reached, and the positive impact of reforestation expanded across The Gambia.
Role overview (what you’ll do) — under staff supervision
As a volunteer, you will:
- Maintain the tree nursery — watering seedlings, removing weeds, transplanting, and controlling pests;
- Participate in tree planting on degraded lands;
- Dig and maintain water retention ditches (swales);
- Deliver educational workshops to local residents on permaculture, companion planting, and agroforestry;
- Collaborate with the local team to monitor tree growth, report progress, and document results;
- Exchange techniques, ideas, and best practices with the project team.
Who we’re looking for
- Individuals with a basic knowledge of English;
- Volunteers motivated to work outdoors and willing to engage in physical activity;
- Those who wish to share knowledge and learn new ecological techniques;
- People with patience, adaptability, and respect for local culture and traditions.
Training & supervision
Upon arrival, your first day will be dedicated to orientation — introduction to the project, the tree nursery, and the working area, as well as safety instructions. Afterwards, you will work under the mentorship of experienced team members, gradually taking on more responsibility and participating in teamwork and shared learning.
How to prepare
Before arrival, prepare both practically and mentally. The work takes place outdoors, often in a hot and humid climate, so it is recommended to bring comfortable shoes, protective clothing, a hat, mosquito repellent, a flashlight, and spare batteries. Since internet access is limited, it’s advisable to get a local SIM card.
Psychological preparation is equally important — the work can be physically demanding, and conditions may differ from those in Europe.
Before arriving, learn about local customs and the local language — showing respect for the culture builds trust and genuine relationships within the community.
Program Goals
- Increase forest cover on degraded lands;
- Restore soil fertility and prevent erosion;
- Improve food security for local communities;
- Educate people on sustainable practices;
- Encourage cooperation and environmental regeneration.
Fundraising
Each volunteer is encouraged to participate in fundraising to support project sustainability and expand environmental restoration efforts.

This can’t be started differently than to say that the experience was amazing, and it truly warmed my heart. If you are thinking of going to The Gambia as a volunteer, don’t wait any longer – just go for it. You won’t regret it. I know I should start at the beginning, so I’ll go back now.
