About the Academy

The Football Academy operates under the local school and sports association. It is dedicated to children and young people who dream of playing football but  are facing lack access to equipment, coaching, or facilities. The academy provides a safe and motivating environment that helps children develop both physically and socially through teamwork and fair play.

Why your help matters

In many Gambian villages, sports infrastructure and trained coaches are scarce. Your contribution offers children the chance to engage in structured physical activity, develop healthy habits, and experience teamwork. Through your involvement, you’ll help boost children’s self-confidence, sense of belonging, and motivation. Sports unite and inspire — your presence makes that possible.

Role overview (what you’ll do) — under staff supervision

As a volunteer, you’ll take an active role in supporting local coaches and young players. You’ll:
• assist in planning and conducting football training sessions,
• help organize matches, games, and sports events,
• encourage girls to participate in sports and create inclusive activities,
• contribute to developing recreational programs at school and within the community,
• help maintain sports equipment and playing fields,
• share your enthusiasm and promote teamwork, discipline, and fair play.

You’ll work closely with local coaches and teachers under the supervision of a community coordinator. The first few days will include observation and shadowing; as you grow more confident, you’ll gradually lead activities or small training sessions with feedback. You’ll also help design warm-ups, drills, and friendly tournaments, always with guidance from local staff.

Who we’re looking for

This placement is perfect for anyone who:
• enjoys sports and physical activity,
• loves working with children and young people,
• is patient, creative, and positive,
• respects cultural differences and enjoys teamwork.

You don’t need to be a professional coach — what matters most is enthusiasm, openness, and the desire to make a difference.

Training & supervision

Before arrival, you’ll receive a short volunteer handbook and online orientation. Upon arrival, the volunteer coordinator will meet you in Kololi, introduce you to the project, and accompany you to Kerewan Samba Sira. There, you’ll be welcomed by the village chief and local coordinator. The first day includes an introductory meeting, project overview, and village tour. You’ll then begin working with local coaches and children, with ongoing guidance and regular check-ins.

How to prepare

Before arrival, check the following to ensure you’re ready for your placement:
• Clothing and gear: Bring sportswear, appropriate footwear, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent.
• Living conditions: Expect simple accommodation, limited internet access, and no hot water.
• Cultural awareness: Dress modestly and respect local customs and traditions.
• Mindset: Be flexible, curious, and ready to adapt — simplicity is part of the experience.

Program Goals

The main goal is to promote youth development through sport, provide positive opportunities for children, and strengthen community bonds by fostering teamwork, respect, and inclusion.

Wish list

Each volunteer is encouraged to raise at least €250 before departure. The funds support the purchase of footballs, jerseys, sports shoes, cones, and other materials. Donations also contribute to maintaining the local Career and Education Centre and other community projects in the village.

This can’t be started differently than to say that the experience was amazing, and it truly warmed my heart. If you are thinking of going to The Gambia as a volunteer, don’t wait any longer – just go for it. You won’t regret it. I know I should start at the beginning, so I’ll go back now.
