Work Environment
Volunteers work in collaboration with the local team, partner organizations, and volunteers from various fields – from education, arts, and healthcare to social work and media. Work takes place both at the volunteer house, where posts, photos, and videos are created, and in the field while filming activities, interviews, and community projects.
The environment encourages creative collaboration among volunteers (photographers, videographers, teachers, etc.), making the work dynamic, team-oriented, and open to free expression of ideas, while respecting ethical guidelines and local culture.
Why your help matters
The world needs to hear and see the stories that life in The Gambia creates.
With your content, you will help raise awareness, encourage new volunteers and donors, and showcase the true strength of community.
Your work will help build bridges between The Gambia and the rest of the world, strengthen the organization’s image, and give a voice to those who often do not have one.
Role overview (what you’ll do) — under staff supervision
As a social media volunteer, you will participate in:
• preparing posts for Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms,
• editing photos and videos for publication,
• writing captions, stories, and updates from volunteer projects,
• assisting with website management and online campaigns,
• creating promotional materials (e.g., posters, short videos),
• supporting partner organizations in setting up their profiles,
• working with local volunteers on digital workshops and basic media literacy,
• creating content that respects ethical principles and tells authentic stories.
Who we’re looking for
• students of communication, media, marketing, arts, or social sciences,
• individuals with a sense for writing, photography, and social dynamics,
• creative people who can work independently and in a team,
• those who enjoy storytelling, humanitarian work, and intercultural exchange,
• basic knowledge of tools such as Canva, Instagram Business, Meta Suite, or CapCut is an advantage but not required.
How to prepare
It is recommended that before your arrival you:
• prepare a concept and ideas for posts (themes, style, target audience),
• ensure you have a phone or camera with a good lens,
• download basic content-editing applications,
• bring light summer clothing for field work,
• consider ethical approaches to photographing children and local communities,
• ensure safe storage of materials (Google Drive, external hard drive).
Training and supervision
On the first day, the volunteer coordinator will welcome you, provide all necessary information, introduce the project, and explain the fieldwork guidelines.
The organization’s mentor oversees the content, selection, and use of photos and videos. In cooperation with community members, you will gain insight into the environment in which you create content for social media, while ensuring that all representations remain respectful and authentic.
Program Goals
The main goal is to increase the visibility of local organizations’ projects, share inspiring stories from The Gambia, and build a strong, lasting digital community that connects Slovenia and The Gambia with the rest of the world.
Fundraising
Volunteers may assist in digital fundraising campaigns – by creating posts that address donors and present specific needs (medicines, school supplies, equipment).
Donations contribute to greater project effectiveness and improved living conditions for the local population.

This can’t be started differently than to say that the experience was amazing, and it truly warmed my heart. If you are thinking of going to The Gambia as a volunteer, don’t wait any longer – just go for it. You won’t regret it. I know I should start at the beginning, so I’ll go back now.
