As our children step into a well-deserved week of holidays—sure to be filled with laughter, play, and precious family moments—we are already looking forward to something truly special awaiting them upon their return. On Friday, March 27, our Kids Are The World Nursery School will come alive with color, rhythm, and stories as we celebrate a Cultural Day dedicated to the rich and vibrant diversity of The Gambia. On this day, children will embark on a journey of discovery, exploring the country’s many ethnic communities.

Though small in size, The Gambia is a land of remarkable cultural richness. It is home to a mosaic of ethnic groups, languages, traditions, and ways of life. Within the same communities, people live side by side—each bringing their own unique expressions of identity, from language and clothing to music, dance, and cuisine. This diversity is not only beautiful but deeply meaningful. It teaches us that when cultures meet, they create space for understanding, respect, and connection. For children, these early encounters with diversity nurture curiosity, empathy, and an appreciation for the uniqueness in every individual.

In our Kids Are The World Nursery School, children come from a variety of backgrounds, most commonly from the Mandinka, Fula, Wolof, Serer, and Jola communities. On Cultural Day, we will shine a special light on these groups. Through storytelling, conversation, and hands-on experiences, children will engage with their traditions in a joyful and meaningful way.

Part of the day will be dedicated to discovering the stories, customs, and identities of these communities. As food is at the heart of every culture, children will also be introduced to traditional dishes that reflect the heritage of each group—offering a taste of culture in the most literal and delightful sense.

No celebration would be complete without traditional drinks, and children will have the opportunity to learn about and enjoy baobab and wonjo—two beloved beverages often shared during festive gatherings. They will also explore traditional clothing, where vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and unique designs tell stories passed down through generations.

The day will be enriched with music and dance—the heartbeat of Gambian culture. Through rhythm and movement, stories are told, joy is shared, and community is strengthened. A particularly exciting highlight will be the appearance of the Zimba—traditional masked figures deeply rooted in local heritage. With their striking costumes and dynamic performances, they will bring energy, wonder, and excitement, creating a truly unforgettable experience for the children.

Our wish is to offer children more than just a day of fun—we want to create a space where they can feel, experience, and connect with the richness of the culture that surrounds them. Such moments leave lasting impressions, nurturing not only joy but also understanding, belonging, and a sense of community.

How can you support our Cultural Day?

To bring this special day to life, we kindly invite your support in raising €350 to cover the costs of tents, water, refreshments, music, and the Zimbas performance. With your support, we can create a meaningful, educational, and joyful experience that the children will carry with them long after the day has passed.

We warmly invite anyone who feels inspired to support our project to join us in creating beautiful and lasting memories for our children.
